LOCATION: Bearsden, Glasgow
TYPE: Residential – House extension – Re-modelling
YEAR COMPLETED: 2020
AREA: 77sqm
The project brief was to extend a semi-detached house and provide additional space for an open plan family room and an additional bedroom upstairs.
A simple brief which allowed us to create a unique and bespoke new house.
The extension is formed by 2 volumes, a double storey to the side and single to the garden. The extension on the front elevation is discreetly and politely consistent with the style of the existing house. At the rear the extension has a more contemporary language and it is conceived to frame out views of the garden and capture the natural light with a long skylight.
Internally, feature wooden elements generates a narrative of vertical lines which unify new and old, creating a continuous flow through the house. The timber slats motif, wrapping around the stairs define a pivotal element around whom the entire space of the house is structured both horizontally and vertically. Internal paths cut through the house from the entrance hall to the rear garden and simultaneously from lower to upper level where gradually a triple height revels an exciting ‘bridge’ to the new master bedroom.
Externally, designed sitting features and canopy make the patio an extended part of the living room to the garden.
