LOCATION: Govan, Glasgow
TYPE: Education
YEAR COMPLETED: 2017
AREA: 600sqm
The project commissioned by Kirktonholme Childcare Group was for a best practice design led new built nursery
Located in a site formerly occupied by shipbuilding and engineering works, the project is part of a regenerative mixed use master plan for the area opposite to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Govan.
We responded to the brief with a building where the articulation of the shape and the use of natural light as element of the project, offer the children a discovery experience while playing and using the building.
The front elevation is defined by a lower solid part to provide privacy and protection counterpointed by a permeable upper façade where openings are organised with playful approach: different size of windows alternate and are located at a children eye level to allow view to the surrounds.
At the rear elevation the lower level is fully open to the garden-play area and a canopy defines a sheltered area to play outside while raining. The upper part has a recessed façade and a roof terrace which doubles the external playground for the room at first floor.
The internal layout is organized on a strong separation of the service (brick volume)/playrooms (rendered volume) and a double height void with feature circular and square shaped rooflights forms a welcoming reception hall and connects the two levels.
