Conversion of an existing building into an Islamic cultural and learning centre for the Middle East and North African community.
The project entails the complete strip our and full conversion of an industrial building that was previously converted into a pub.
Although the building covers an area of over 400sqm its facade has a modest presence on the street. Our approach was to create a distinctive and modern appearance using a coloured cladding. We aimed for the façade to act a beacon and at the same time to be consistent with the industrial surrounding building; we took advantage of the staggered position of the unit not aligned, on one side, with the other building and favoured a corner perspective which added a 3d dimension to the otherwise flat façade; continuity on the panels at any corner and recessed access detail provided a the perception of a solid volume but still open and welcoming.
The brief was for a multifunctional building with a main room used as a teaching/conference room as well as a praying room. Other rooms accommodate meeting rooms, offices a catering area and an indoor soft play area.
We created a flexible concept where glass partitions separate the rooms and skylights letting a dramatic zenithal light in which uniquely change the perception of the rooms through the day.
